Newstalk - This amazing 14-year-old carried his younger brother 40 miles for cerebral palsy awareness
this sort of thing annoys me profoundly.
first of all cerebral palsy is NOT disease, it is usually caused by brain damage at or around birth.
secondly look at the title of the piece. 'This AMAZING 14 year old!
It draws attention to the 14 year old's magnanimous 'raising awareness' not to the boy with cerebral palsy per se.
it draws on the hero (the 14 year old) who carries his 'burdensome' brother on his back. YUCK!
So this promotes the image of non-disabled people's caring/fund raising/awareness raising...isn't that so FANTASTIC, but all at the expense of portraying the disabled person as needing to be 'carried' .
well of course he doesn't need to be carried. probably has a wheelchair.
the message of POWER is that the 14 year old has it, not the 7 year old.
yuck yuck yuck.
I really don't like it.
A disabled woman challenges the 'status quo' in Ireland. This blog was started to highlight inequality, abuse and injustice in the lives of disabled people. The wooden spoon was given to me when I graduated (PhD) as I'm known to 'stir up' and get things done. I'm still stirring from my wheelchair...Justice for disabled people demands we 'stir-up' complacency, injustice, inequality lack of services, and scapegoating . Disabled people deserve rights not charity! "Nothing about me without me!"
